Open Call for Guest Posts – Help Us Keep the Blog Running!

When the Geek Baby arrives, one of the things we’re probably not going to be wanting to worry about a whole lot is writing new blog posts! Certainly not for a bit. However, to keep the doors from swinging shut here, we have a cunning plan! But we need your help.

You know how for heading to the hospital for going into labor you should have a bag packed with all the things you’ll need, or think you’ll need? And I was reminded recently: you might also want the car seat in the car already… Well, what we’re thinking of is the digital version of that.

We’re looking for guest posts that are not time-bound, and could run whenever. Then, when the time comes, we can just start scheduling them like mad, and they will be the blog for however long we have them for. We are planning on doing the April A to Z Challenge again this year, so April will be taken care of: so we would like to have posts ready to go by May.

Make sense? Sound good? Let us know in the comments if you would like to contribute! If you’re looking for post ideas or example guest posts, read on!

Come on, this blog ain't going to write itself!

Come on, this blog ain’t going to write itself!

Here are some suggested Categories of posts if you’re looking for inspiration:

I think any and all of these could use some wonderful new additions! Or, if you’d like a sample of a few of our previous guest posts:

I think it would be hard to come up with a topic we would say “no” to! So let us know in the comments below: would you like to write a post for Comparative Geeks?

We have to get bigger

  1. I’m happy to guest post – I can do anything you want really; character studies, tv shows, movies (though the UK is behind so that might not be ideal), nostalgia posts.

On a separate note, I admire your forward thinking. The car seat comment made me chuckle because it reminded me of my sister’s predicament a few years ago. She is the most organised person I know, I swear she’s anal about always being prepared (she should serve like our brother!). But she forgot to buy the base for little Z-man’s car seat (a necessity because of her car), and he decided to come early!

    • Oh no! Yes, I was reminded (told, really) recently that it would be a good idea to just put the car seat in a car here at some point and just be ready with it. Seems like good advice 🙂

And I actually already had you down for a guest post 😉 You had mentioned you were willing previously, and I wasn’t going to let you off the hook so easily!

Is there anything UK-minded that you would like to do? British TV show or something like that? Being a Geek in the UK? Random pictures of Castles?

Also, our character studies are incredibly popular, so that’s not a bad one at all!

      • lol – you sounded like Gene’O there for a minute 😉 I’ll have a think on the UK angle. My mind went to Captain Britain, but thinking of the character usually makes me grimace! Don’t get me wrong, I love my country, but a superhero from Essex – it just doesn’t have the same ring to it 🙂 Maybe I need to give him a chance. I don’t actually know much about him. And you never know, now they have SHIELD, they might follow it up with STRIKE!

        • The comic I actually had a subscription to growing up was Excalibur – headed up by Captain Britain and set in the UK. So he has a warm place in my heart. The team also had Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, and Colossus – still some of my favorite X-Men, and superheroes in general! I was looking recently and saw they have finally started to digitize this series, so I could go back and read some the early days!

I could go with something really stereotypical to recommend, like “Monty Python!” But a lot of British TV makes its way over here and is quite popular – although much of it is also remade in the USA for no particular reason (Broadchurch, anyone?). Someone mentioned Luther a while back… still need to watch that!

  2. I’d hate to see a blog go under or lapse into silence just because you have a wonderful new obstacle in your life. The fact that you’re thinking about this already really shows how dedicated your are to your community. If you’d like I’d be willing to compose a piece about the complications of time travel in movies. Or if there’s anything that you’d like. I figure I could spare a little extra time to write some pieces for your guys.
Cheers and congrats on the geek baby!

    • Thanks! I love the Time Travel post idea, that sounds great! Time Travel is definitely… interesting in movies 🙂 They try really hard sometimes, though!

We’ve kept the blogging going strong through vacations (occasionally with Freshly Pressed guest posts…) so this is just like that, only with no idea on what days we’ll actually need things!

  3. I can’t help out for May, sorry, but I’m pretty sure I could swing something over the summer if you’re still looking for content then.

  4. Hey, I’ve been meaning to write up something that isn’t related to Game of Thrones in awhile. I’d be happy and honored if you would accept it as a guest submission. It would be a Movie/Boardgame relevant post.

  5. Woohoo! Baby! 🙂 I’d be up for a guest post. Nostalgia generated the most thought bubbles for me, but I could also do Character Studies, or any category that’s lacking in the love. (Lists might be fun, too…)

I know my own blog doesn’t come off as terribly geeky, but I swear I’m a 90s kid who knows all the theme songs and collected all the trading cards. 😉

  6. I’m definitely in and have said so both privately and on the Facebooks. But you know. Maybe if I say it on the thread that will encourage other people to join the mayhem 😉

    • There are a lot of people who have chimed in so far, I am very pleased with the response 🙂 With our current schedule we are running 4 posts a week plus something fun for Fridays, and I intend to plan out all the Fridays in May and June in advance. So really I think we have several weeks covered already!

  8. I would honored to do as many guest posts as you need filled in. I’m an old school comic book guy with a large collection so I could do comics, nostalgia related to that, lists as well. I do lists of things like ‘What writers need but never think about’ at times. You just name how many and what areas and I’ll get them ready.

    • Thank you! And thanks for thinking about it even if you can’t 🙂 The thought of contributing to another blog while keeping up one’s own – and then doing things like “living life” – it’s a lot!

      • Too true! I’d certainly be up for it in the future, someday after A to Z is over and my blogging life is back to normal. 🙂 You guys have a fantastic blog!

        • Yes, A to Z is the ghost of blogging present 🙂 That’s why I wanted to get this notice out now – give people time either in March before A to Z, or during April if they got stuff written in advance. I’m thinking about the 30 or so posts I am planning to write in the next month on top of my normal schedule… that’s a lot! But it will force me to keep the A to Z posts short, right? 😉

  11. Thank you to everyone who has offered to help us with posts – and to everyone else who thought about it and can’t. I get it! I think we are going to have a good number of posts and a good group of bloggers. I will work on connecting with you via social media to add you as a contributor to Comparative Geeks!

This is all just really heart warming. As was mentioned in the comments, this is us showing that we care about our community enough to keep the blog going. But even more, this is you all showing you care about this blog enough to want to see it keep going – and that is really just fantastic! Thank you all!

  12. Howdy. Glad to hear you’ve had so much help! I’ve been putting a topic list together for that education series I mentioned. I realized I’m going to need like 2 or 3 posts just to explain my experiences with public school (I did poorly for a combination of reasons, but I am obviously smart.) and why I don’t think homeschooling is really any major improvement. Probably another 2 after that on vocational training programs how I benefited from not going to college at 17-18.

I feel like I can’t approach the fiction without giving context with my own background. My background is probably atypical. It seems like enough for a series unto itself, though. This is what always happens to me. One-off posts are not my strong suit, especially trying to keep them on the short side.

Not sure how long it will take me to finish, but what I can do is write some drafts, and if you and Holly are interested I’ll let you know what I’ve got when it’s done.

    • That plan sounds good, write some drafts and let us know! And no deadline or time limit, whenever works for you. If everyone comes through on committed posts, we’re looking to be set into June! I’m excited 🙂

  15. I am currently working on a article on the subject of ‘player immersion’ on what does and doesn’t consitute as good connection to the player.

It mainly focuses on tutorials and certain aspects of gaming.
