Ghostbusters – the worst movie trailer ever?

When I was seeing news about a reviled trailer for the Ghostbusters movie I figured that a new trailer had hit and that it was truly bad. So I went and looked, and… nope. Just the same one.

A trailer that has over 31 million views, over 230,000 likes right now, and over 740,000 dislikes.

I mean, that’s approaching the levels of something like Rebecca Black’s Friday. Meaning either a) it’s being shared around because it’s so bad and others are agreeing and disliking it… or b) it’s being deliberately targeted with bad blood to dislike it.

Ask the director, Paul Feig, and it seems he has an answer on that. I found the quote on The Mary Sue, but reading the original interview piece was more revealing.

It’s sad to hear a statement like that about Geek Culture, but at the same time, can you blame him? Some of what I liked in the original interview is the list of movies he’s done, with Melissa McCarthy as well: BridesmaidsThe HeatSpy, and now Ghostbusters. And I will admit, we love all of those movies. The grossout of Bridesmaids isn’t my normal sort of humor, but The Heat we absolutely love, and we watched Spy recently and wanted to blog on it but just haven’t yet…

Quick thoughts on Spy: it reminded us a lot of the recent Get Smart (in fact, we watched Get Smart the week after and were amazed how much they are reminiscent). However, unlike Get Smart, where the new spy is competent but ends up with a lot of slapstick and accident sort of jokes around him. Melissa McCarthy in Spy is competent and a lot of the jokes are around people not expecting her to be competent, things like her awful cover identities.

So was the Ghostbusters trailer the best thing ever? Nah. Are there legitimate reasons someone might not be happy for the movie? Sure – we’re tired of reboots, why is it a reboot instead of a 30-years-later, it’s looking like a grosser movie than the originals… But I mean, the original was made by a bunch of comedians, and this one’s a bunch of comedians. It’s 30 years later, things change. But do I think these are the reasons why trolls are trolling and disliking this movie trailer? Nope.

Do I trust Paul Feig, with that track record of movies, to deliver? Do I trust that cast to deliver? Yes, I do. Do you?

Forever better than the Oscars… the MTV Movie Awards

I mean, I didn’t even watch them, just saw that they had happened because my social media started popping up with movie trailers that aired during it. But especially after such a disappointing and controversial Oscars this year, I had to run off and see what had won!

Link to that here.

Very nice! Deadpool, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mad Max Fury Road… there’s some good stuff there. Nicely done, MTV Movie Awards. To be fair, Deadpool would be an option for next year’s Oscars, so we’ll see how that goes…

But the categories, the movies, the everything, better. Maybe it’s time to replace the one with the other…

Sorry there’s not more to this post than that, but! Have a few trailers after the jump!

Team Cap or Team Stark? #CivilWar!

It’s here! The Civil War trailer to end all Civil War trailers. Well, maybe the earlier ones were better, but the Internet exploded about the end of this one… we’ve shared some of our favorites over on our Facebook page.

Also there’s this:

Why are some of those characters on the sides they’re on? I guess we’re going to have to wait and find out! Which means they’re going to have to explain it in the movie… but Hawkeye vs. Black Widow! Scarlet Witch vs. Vision! How? Why?

I think it’s time. We see the teams… what team are you?

Was there anything good from the Big Game commercials?

So, we were at a party for the recent sports bowl, but it was multigenerational and they decided that some commercials might be inappropriate for the young ones… so they skipped the commercials and just watched the game. If we were hosting the party, might have been the reverse…

We have in the past given lists of commercials from the game, especially trailers, after the game. They have been poorly received, because people catch them at the time or soon after. Others compile them. It’s not something we need to do.

Meaning I didn’t do it this year… but maybe should have. I’ve seen a couple of trailers, but that’s it. So… was there anything you would recommend from this year’s game’s commercials? Let us know or drop a YouTube link in the comments below! And after the drop, one of the few commercials that we saw during the game… and that I did not care for.

Even More Trailers!

Sorry, the Geek Baby has been sick for a while now, and the last few days have been especially hard. Have been falling behind on things in general.

Luckily, with the Christmas slate of movies (read: Star Wars), lots of big-name movie trailers for 2016 have been hitting. Julia shared Apocalypse the other day, which was good for some nostalgia feels. But even better? How about Independence Day.

That looks good. I like that direction – post-alien attack, we build up using their tech, and expecting their return. Then “Round 2, Fight!”

One more trailer after the break!
