The Dark Knight Returns and Moral Relativism

Absolute Dark Knight Cover

Cover to Absolute Dark Knight

I don’t know why, but I’ve had a big mental block against doing this post. In our quest to review books and comics, the next one on my list was The Dark Knight Returns. However, I don’t think I can just review it. For one thing, we already have an excellent review of this comic, in two parts:

  1. Batman, retired? Are you kidding me?
  2. The Dark Knight v. The Man of Steel

Thanks again to our guest blogger Gene’O of Sourcerer and Just Gene’O for those!

So I don’t want to just re-do something that’s already been done well. However, it’s in part because of reading these reviews that I read these comics in the first place. As the PBS Idea Channel says, there can be advantages to reading something with spoilers, like I did with this. It was a ton of fun. Great comic.

I thought about writing a LitFlix, but I feel like it boils down to “yep, Nolan’s Dark Knight series relied on these comics a lot.” But instead, I’ve decided to focus in on one aspect, and one which is by no means unique to The Dark Knight Returns, but which is laid out plain as day in the comic: Moral Relativism. What I mean by this, at least in the context of this comic, is the idea that if we can find the psychological cause to their actions, then they are no longer responsible. Onward!

Best of 2013

With the onset of the new year and the end of the old David and I decided that we were going to spend some time reflecting on 2013. There were some great things that happened in 2013. We saw some great movies, read some great books, and played some amazing games. David and I decided we wanted to share some of our best of 2013. Now these are all things that we experienced for the first time in 2013, this does not necessarily mean that they came out in 2013, but that is because with books and comics we are not always the best about keeping up with current trends. David will be sharing his opinion tomorrow, but here is my best of 2013. Continue reading

Verdict: Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Blacklist

SHIELD

Continuing on my journey through new fall tv shows this week was the premiere of The Blacklist on NBC and Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Both of these shows I was pretty excited about seeing. One I felt like I was guaranteed to be invested in so unless the pilot was a total flop I was going to be hooked. The other one I thought looked interesting, but had no guarantee of the turnout. I knew some of the actors and the concept is brilliant, but you can never guarantee how something is going to turn out.

To start out I will just spoil the ending and say I will continue to watch both of these shows. For a more detailed spoiler free response continue reading. Continue reading

2013 Fall TV Shows Premieres

So the new fall tv season is starting out and there is a pretty good list of new shows and returning shows starting up. The problem is figuring out what you are going to commit the time to watching. There have been a couple shows that David and I have recently dropped because they just were not holding our attention. It can be hard to decide what new shows to watch. If they do not hook me at the first episode do you try a couple more or do you just give up because there are so many other things to watch. Last year Elementary was a show that I tried one episode and just really did not care, even though I like the actor. Some of that came down to the fact that the BBC Sherlock Holmes is just so good another Sherlock show had a lot to live up to.

So now we come to another round of new shows to entertain and dazzle trying to grab our attention. So here are some shows coming out that I want to give a chance and one that I am already sold on. Continue reading
