Our blogging friend Luther Siler of infinitefreetime.com has a book that came out this week, Searching for Malumba. It’s about Education, a topic we’re passionate about. Links below to get you to the book and many other writings by Luther!

We did this last year, and it was a lot of fun. What were the best and worst movie adaptations from existing source material? What we have to work from are our LitFlix, the movies we see after reading the source material. I’ll be writing about the comics adaptations of the year today, and Holly will cover the books tomorrow.
We’ve fallen behind some this fall, so the list of what we have to go from is smaller than the overall list of movie adaptations. I think the biggest deal is that we didn’t see Gone Girl, which people seems to have loved. Oh, and we haven’t seen Battle of the Five Armies yet, but expect that in the coming weeks…
Comics-wise, we are pretty good. And what a year for comics! Four big-name Marvel movies, some great independent comic adaptations, and a number of ones that may not be quite as good… which we may not have seen! So let me lay out my favorites both as a movie, and as an adaptation!
As Holly mentioned, we watched Snowpiercer last week. This movie came out directly on demand, and it’ll be interesting to see how it does because of that. Of course, for our purposes – for doing a LitFlix – it made it odd for a deadline. I finally read the comic, and then we rented the movie. We’ll probably buy it on disc eventually… but it’s not even out that way yet!
All that is to say, sorry this is late. Also, I acknowledge that many of you have probably not seen this movie. With our LitFlix, we compare to the comics, which I am also thinking you haven’t read. I would recommend both – the movie was great, and the comic was great.
I recommend both also because they are very different from one another. Which I found fascinating, after reading it – certainly, it was a very adaptable story. One that got very changed. It’s interesting after watching Sin City recently, and seeing a comic so directly adapted – followed by one that departed so completely – was interesting!
Sensitive to the fact that I don’t anticipate many people have seen this movie yet, I will keep the spoilers minimal, sticking with the initial thread of the plot in both comic and movie. After all, if I tried to describe similarities and differences, I’d be at it all week!

So yesterday David and I watched Snowpiercer and the movie was fantastic, but it got me thinking about how we deal with weather and climate change in science fiction stories. From what I can find there seems to be two different story telling methods to deal with the environment in stories. One is that basically nature tries to overcompensate for what has happened and there is an apocalyptic environmental event of some sort or a dystopic turn in the weather, usually causing a great deal of problem for any people. The other is that we try and control the weather in some way and that either goes well or goes very, very poorly. There are numerous examples of all these scenarios throughout various science fiction stories.

Well hello, constant readers! We’ve had a lot of content lately about comics – just can’t be helped! And there’s more to come! Hopefully you’re enjoying it and it’s been good stuff. Indeed, there’s been so much comics stuff we’ve had to put some off – like I mentioned recently with changing around some of our LitFlix plans.
The main announcement I want to lead with is that we will be having a guest series of posts at the end of this week, focused on The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller. The posts will be by Gene’O, editor-in-chief over at Sourcerer – the blog where I also write some posts about Music and Comics.
Expect to see his series go up this Friday and Saturday, and please welcome him as a guest poster to the blog! Read on for some more of the comics happenings here on Comparative Geeks!
