Coming Soon to Comparative Geeks

So what needs to be said first of all is that we are moving! We have decided that to expand our options on with Comparative Geeks we are going to move to a self-hosted site in the beginning of July. There will be a lot of exciting things coming including new features and posts going up seven days a week. By hosting the site ourselves it gives us an option to potentially expand. This is an exciting new adventure and we hope that you will come along for the ride with us. Here are some of the exciting new things we are including in the new website.

Shadow Surprise!

Podcast

This is probably one of the biggest things we are adding and that is a podcast called Comparative Opinions. We are still trying to figure out the exact formatting, but we are planning on posting it once a week, keeping it to 30 to 45 minutes. It is probably going to start with just David and I talking about the same sorts of things we blog about, just in a different format. Eventually we are hoping to include some other bloggers and potentially interviews, but for now we are going to keep it simple to start.

Forums

Now something that we are going to hope that we can use to get more feedback and participation from the audience is a forum. We are hoping to potentially use it as a place to discuss books, movies, and explore other questions about a variety of geeky things. Eventually we might use it to start a book club or even a movie club of some sort to allow everyone to participate in a longer term discussion.

Additional Contributors

So another reason that we are going down this direction is to increase the number of contributor posts. We are trying to make Comparative Geeks not just the Holly-and-David show, but be something that can be a place for others to join in. Whether they have sites of their own or want a place to post without needing their own hosting. Eventually we would like to grow to be able to have more than one post a day, but that is a bit more of a distant dream right now.

So if you or someone you know wants to geek out a little as a contributor we would be happy to talk to you about what that could be. Whether it is an occasional post or a regular spot, there are all sorts of options. You can either leave a comment below or you are welcome to email us a comparativegeeks@gmail.com!

And stay tuned for more updates over the next month!

Weekend Coffee Share – One Year of Geek Baby

Shadow of Catan

Those of you who have been reading us for a while may remember that this time last year, Holly and I fell off the face of the blog, and we were held aloft by guest posts. For six whole weeks, the guest posts kept us rolling. It was really amazing. And if you missed it, here’s a link to links to those posts.

If we were having coffee, I’d be telling you that in case you missed it. But that also means, we’re celebrating a year of the Geek Baby. And what a crazy year.

Now we have almost-words, almost-walking, and all sorts of other things, Geek Baby. And it’s a blast. And we have sleep happening at night, which has given us back enough time in the evenings that we’re actually getting to play co-op video games again! We’re watching movies on a weekly basis! And we’ve gotten some long blog posts out as well.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that this is leaving us with confidence that we can do more with what we have going on here. More with Comparative Geeks. That’s been the dream for this year, and it feels obtainable. There’s still more to do with that, and more preparation in advance. And thinking back to those guest posts, those contributions, last year… more of that sounds great to me.

Looking forward to this next year. How’re you?

Two and a Half Years of Comparative Geeks!

Merlin Relaxing

At this point I’ve made a tradition of celebrating the milestone every six months of Comparative Geeks! With the Geek Baby we’re now counting much shorter increments in time, like age in weeks, or hours between feedings (or hours we get to sleep!) so six more months suddenly feels like a really long time!

As part of this most recent six months, we had six weeks of guest posts, along with the Friday posts I wrote in advance. That was a lot of great content from some really great bloggers, so if you missed that, I collected them all here. We are still incredibly grateful for that, because without it, I would not be sitting here now saying that we’ve had a successful, continuing blog here on Comparative Geeks!

Seeing how much success we had, and how our life has changed for sure, we are continuing to operate with additional bloggers – now contributors in their own rights, and not just guest writers! And with that, there are now more Comparative Geeks!

Which means some of the basic conceit of the site – it being the two of us, a married couple able to talk through our post ideas on a daily basis – is just not the same anymore. There are more opinions. More fandoms. More experience to bring to the table. And that’s great!

It does mean that some high-level changes need to happen – like the First Time Here and About the Authors pages need an overhaul. There’s already an authors scroll in the sidebar on those pages – recent posts by all of the different Geeks!

I’m still slowly plugging away on a Geek 501 page, as well. In the mean time, I’ve also added a link to our whirlwind board game recommendations – our annual 12 Days of TableTop Day post. And the LitFlix… well, we’re working on it. It’s been hard to make it to movies this year, which makes us sad. It’s the number one getaway thing we have done without the Geek Baby – but we haven’t pulled off both going to see a movie together yet.

At some point we really need to recruit a babysitter!

I think we’re on a roll now, and I forsee we’ve definitely got the next six months in us. I fully expect that in January we’ll be talking about three years of Comparative Geeks! Where it goes from there? Time will tell. Like I said, I’m hoping I get a few more hours of sleep tonight… we’ll see about months of blogging!

Thank you for reading and commenting and liking this blog. It really means a lot to us. We started out with low goals, and have stayed small and consistent on purpose. Hopefully you like what we have going on. If there’s something you especially like, let us know in the comments. If there’s something you really don’t, let us know in the comments or a private message on Twitter or something if you prefer! Help us make this a blog you want to read and keep reading.

Coming Up on Comparative Geeks

Cat in Wrapping Paper

Over the next few months we are going to have a couple of things that will be a little bit different, so wanted to give a heads up about what will be happening.

First of all, next month we will be participating in the A to Z challenge. We will be posting shorter posts 6 days a week covering topics on Science Fiction Today from A to Z. This will take us through the entire month of April.

Something else that we will be starting Monday is our countdown to International Tabletop Day on April 11. The countdown will be happening on the Comparative Geeks Instagram this year. We will be highlighting one game a day counting down to April 11 where we will put up a post with all of the games highlighted on Instagram.

Finally, the big thing is that starting some time in May we will be having a time of mostly guest posts. Geek Baby is due in May and therefore David and I will be a bit preoccupied for a while. Thank you to all the bloggers who are writing guest posts for us during that time it is a huge help to let us continue the blog during a hectic time.

That is basically everything. Hope you enjoy the A to Z posts, look out for the countdown to Tabletop Day on Instagram, and look out for some great guest posts in May!

2 Year Anniversary of Comparative Geeks!

Can you believe it! Well, maybe you can. I can’t believe it! Two years ago over this last long weekend of the first half of the year, Holly and I started up a blog. We created our About page and posting policy.

We spent the first week laying out some of our plans, including our LitFlix, as 2013 was a great year for movies based on books and comics. We’re still doing that project, having just lined up this year’s plans – a bit skimpier!

In our second week, we already published one of our very top posts – A character study of Gretel from the movie Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters. Silly movie, great character study.

Flash forward two years, and we have a great group of bloggers we interact with regularly. We have been Freshly Pressed (though on a guest post) and referenced a few times on some bigger sites. We’ve certainly learned some things, but while there are ways we could change and grow and use all of that learning, we also really enjoy what we are doing here.

We have so much we still have and want to talk about! And there’s always new and more things as well. But the big change for us this year Holly’s already mentioned – and that will change the blog a bit as well. So let me hit a couple of thoughts on what we are planning for this coming year of Comparative Geeks!
