Reaction: The Husbands of River Song

Every year we always try to watch the Doctor Who Christmas Special as soon as we are able and this year was no exception. Even staying out a little later than we probably should have with Geek Baby to watch it with family on Christmas Day…

This year I was particularly curious because I knew that it was going to involve River Song. The dynamic between the Doctor and River Song has always been an interesting one partly because they keep meeting in the wrong order. So the question is when is this in their timeline and how does it fit into their story that we have seen so far? The story of the episode is pretty much secondary to seeing the relationship between the Doctor and River play out. (Spoilers for the Doctor Who Christmas Special after the jump.)

Favorite Doctor Who? Blink, Moffat, and graphs! Part 2

Last week I ended up breaking up a post about the fan-favorite episode Blink, and about how its writer, Steven Moffat, doesn’t know why it’s such a favorite. You can read that post here. But to jump back into it, here’s the episode rating graph from Graph TV for Doctor Who:

That’s a big mix, episodes all over, generally some loved more than others every season. And that one, lonely outlier at the top, over 9.5. That episode is Blink.

One of the points in the original Mary Sue article that got me thinking about this was about Moffat trying to re-create the magic of this episode now that he’s the showrunner, and failing. But I think it’s more than just trying to make an episode that good again – but to get through the rest of my thought, let’s take a moment with the graph.

In season 1, there are three episodes higher than the others: the season finale, and then the two-parter of The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances. The two parter was written by Steven Moffat. In season 2, there are again two top dots: the season finale, and you guessed it, another Moffat: The Girl in the Fireplace. Then season 3 with Blink. Then season 4, with the top two being Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead by yet again, Steven Moffat.

We talked before about how it’s pretty clear why Moffat became showrunner. But I would also argue it’s more than Blink that he’s trying to recreate. Instead, I think he has some story ideas, monster ideas, that he is trying to perfect. That he keeps coming back to. So let’s look at a few of these story ideas!

What Can We Expect from the Doctor Who Christmas Special?

Well, I have previously done some brainstorming on what I thought might happen in series 7 of Doctor Who, and in the 50th Anniversary Special, and now that these episodes have come to pass, are we there? Have all of my questions been answered? I think not. So what is going to happen in the Christmas Special?

It’s still Moffat at the helm, and he knows how to play a long con. I think he is still planning on answering questions. The 50th Anniversary special tells us this.

But there are also a lot of items on the table, and I don’t know that we’re going to see all of these things. However, there are some known things happening – so what can we expect, given what is known? Onwards, to spoilers and speculation!

The Timeline of River Song

So, a project Holly and I would like to undergo is to explore River Song on Doctor Who in her subjective order, rather than in any sort of chronological, or episode-order, or Doctor-order sort of way. Having watched all of the New Who, this shouldn’t be a problem, right?

The problem with Time Travel is one that is defined by many. Douglas Adams sees it as one of grammar. However, for the Doctor and River Song, the problem of two Time Travelers, at least, is that you keep meeting in the wrong order.

So we plan on starting this marathon tonight, and I have been researching a recommended order, and thought I would talk about this just a bit. If you’re looking for a Timeline of River Song, I will have that linked below! Continue reading

After Series Seven of Doctor Who… What Do I Think Might Happen in the 50th Anniversary Special?

The other day, I blogged about Doctor Who Series Seven. After looking back at that, I’m looking forward. It was a season of nostalgia, of memories of Doctor Who seasons we’ve never even watched. So, not perfect, but it’s kept us entertained.

So I also blogged about what we might expect from the 50th Anniversary Special, coming later this year – what seems likely, now that the special is the next episode?

I also explored some ideas of what a really epic plotline for Doctor Who might be – in terms of making a Doctor Who movie, but which could also be where they are going with a Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special. So let’s see if any of these ideas still have traction!

Let’s look back at my hypotheses, and consider what they’ve set up for themselves so far! Spoilers for Season Seven of Doctor Who!
