It’s been a bit since we did a Science Fiction Today post… so here’s a fun one. How about the end of the world?
Armageddon, the Apocalypse, Ragnarok, the Eschaton… these names and more could be thrown at it. I feel like I have grown up in an era when we’ve half expected the end – at the year 2000, in 2012, any number of times around and between. When we’re not expecting it for real, we seem to be thinking about it in fiction – in science fiction, in horror.
Maybe it’s the EMP Museum that got me thinking about it. They talked about how the current problems of the world tend to bleed into what happens in our horror stories – like the original Godzilla in the advent of the Atomic Age. So what are some of the things we’re worried about right now? Here’s my list of 5 ways the world could end!

Today is the 2nd Annual International TableTop Day! If you’ve not been following our Tumblr, you may have missed our second annual 12 Days of TableTop Day. Fear not! As with last year, I’m going to give you a compiled list of our recommended games from this year!
I’ll include a bit about the game and why we like it, too! A number of these games have apps as well, and this is a great way to get into a number of games on the cheap, or to see if you like them! On to the games!

David and I have talked about a couple of board games that we play on our iPads, but the more we have travelled with them the more that I have fallen in love with them. We have created a considerable collection of board games between our two iPads and the benefits for travel has been incredible. Most travel is just the two of us and having to bring games to try and play, on airports, in airplanes, or even just relaxing on vacation would take a lot of space. The space issue also means that there is a limited number that you can bring. We do still have somewhat of a space issue, but that is just how much we can fit on our iPads.
Now playing on the iPad is very different from playing the normal board game. So if you have the ability to play the physical board game there is something about holding the physical pieces or being able to see the whole board which just feels very different. At the same time the convenience of the iPad board games is really amazing. Continue reading

So, since we’re traveling soon, I was looking for some additions for mobile gaming for the trip. Free games are nice, as are pass-and-play games. There’s a new app for Pandemic, and we’ll have to report back about that later. There’s also pass-and-play for Ticket to Ride now, and more options now for Small World. So we’re excited for these.
A free one I had downloaded but not actually tried was Avengers Alliance. This game was originally on Facebook, it seems, and so has a massive in-game store. But I’ve played Infinity Blade, and had a friend playing it and when he bought gold, he was disappointed because all it did was decrease playability – the game is in the unlocking. So the store shouldn’t be an issue, right?
I’ve played a bit of this game over the weekend, and I want to tell you about it – and then I have to ask, have any of you played it? I could use some input. So if you play Avengers Alliance, in particular, read on and let me know!
