Catching-Up – Metal Gear Solid 4

Metal Gear Solid CollectionI have finally dived into Metal Gear Solid 4, the game that I wanted a PS3 for way back when it came out. Holly got it for me for Christmas, as part of a collection of all the Metal Gear Solid games. For one thing, I can’t believe how long it’s been since Christmas… for another thing, I wasn’t sure where I wanted to start with the series.

My first experience with the Metal Gear Solid series was Metal Gear Solid 2. Some friends and I got together when it came out and, with it set on Very Easy mode, we played through and beat it in ten and a half hours straight. It watches pretty well as a ten-and-a-half-hour movie. I went back from there and played on harder modes, and played Metal Gear Solid, but never got around to the prequel, Metal Gear Solid 3.

So play through the whole series in release order? Chronological order? Only ones I hadn’t played before? I couldn’t decide, but I knew I wanted to play 4, so I’m playing 4! I wanted to share a few thoughts from this game. Quick review: I probably made the right choice, going with an X-Box 360 for Mass Effect rather than the PS3 for Metal Gear Solid 4

Catching Up – Video Games We’ve Been Playing Since We Got Our PS3

I feel like we’ve played a lot of video games lately – I think we moved into a video-game phase when we bought a new (for us) console, the PS3. And I don’t feel like we’ve written much about the games we’ve played lately, because we’ve almost moved too quickly through them. We’ve mentioned them in passing, as we’ve started them. Or as we finished.

And maybe that’s okay, as many of these games have been out a while. Maybe the point where talking about them is interesting has passed. However, I’m sure there are many games you, faithful reader, are also considering and haven’t played yet. So maybe we’ll spark a thought for you.

Lightning Returns CoverLightning Returns arrived today (finally!) and I have a feeling it is going to consume our time, and pull us away from other games. Which is too bad, but it also means I kind of want to get these games out of my system before we move completely on! So here’s a lightning round (pun intended?) of the games we’ve been playing lately, my quick thoughts and recommendations on them. Onward!

Lightning Returns in Another Light

So, as I have been seeing aspects of Lightning Returns, my brain has been turning to mashups of different plots with this, comparisons to other Final Fantasy games, and other things.

Helping my case, they seem to have dived right in to other games, with outfits and schema (the job system) based on other SquareEnix games – mostly other Final Fantasy games, but also Tomb Raider. So, thank you for helping my case.

And then, just to help a bit more, they built in screenshot-sharing functionality, through Twitter and/or Facebook. Is this going to be dangerous? Indubitably.  But it also makes these screenshots easy to find and share with others. So I took a few, found a few on their site, and many more from around Twitter, and thought I would share. My comparisons are perhaps tongue-in-cheek, but the screenshots show a game that is going to fascinating to experience once it arrives.

You can tell the screenshots in this post from social media because they have the copyright information embedded in them.

Console Search – PS3

We’re starting to see the new consoles at the stores, or at least the gaps where they should be, and we’re still not sure what our next console is going to be. PS4? X-Box One? Wait for a Steam Box? Grab a WiiU?

We’re staring down the end of the games for our current console, as well. The last X-Box 360 game I think we are really looking forward to is Final Fantasy XIII-3: Lightning Returns. And we have a lot of a backlog we’re still working through, both some good-looking co-op games and some single player ones. Some of us beating and playing games the other has played. And plenty to replay.

But it’s time to be thinking of new consoles, it seems, and so we’ve done some looking and thinking. Some wish-listing. And it seems that the time may not be better to get one of the current generation’s consoles: there are lots of multi-game packs, and prices are dropping. So our next console may very well be a PS3.
