The Mad Titan, Thanos – A Character Study

From The Infinity Gauntlet

From The Infinity Gauntlet

Marvel’s recent crossover event Infinity recently ended, and with all the events with “Infinity” in the title, this was a crossover that included the Mad Titan, Thanos, as the villain. In Infinity, he had to share the stage with the Builders, and was only one front of a two-front war. Nonetheless, his parts in Infinity tied in heavily to who he is as a villain, and what motivates him.

Of course, other Thanos events like the Infinity Gauntlet help inform us as to who Thanos is and what he’s up to, but Infinity drew from more than that. They did a limited-run, 5-issue series called Thanos Rising which explored the origin story of Thanos. It’s interesting, because with this story, it’s hard to tell where the previous Thanos events fit in. Nonetheless, the psychological underpinnings of the character are explored and revealed in Thanos Rising.

And what they lay out is that this is a mentally unbalanced, overly powerful character, willing – and wanting – to kill anyone and anything. Conquering or razing worlds because he can. So I’ve read the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos Rising, and Infinity, so let’s take a look at who this villain is! Spoilers to follow!

New Marvel Trailers – It’s Trailer Watch Time!

If it hasn’t been obvious, say from posts about Marvel casting choices, I am very excited about the Marvel movie plans. On the Marvel Phase 2 front, we’re expecting films through 2015 right now, and a number of films are expected to be announced here at some point to carry us well into Phase 3.

From other studios, the most exciting is undoubtedly Brian Singer’s Days of Future Past, tapping into one of the most beloved storylines from the X-Men comics, and tying the sequels and prequels all together. There may even be further X-Men movies in the works?

But despite all the news we keep hearing, names of movies, or leaked photos from Brian Singer, official castings… They suddenly hit us with a trailer for two movies this last week. Check those out below! Continue reading

Marvel Movie Casting – Thoughts from IMDb

Recently I gave you my thoughts about a Doctor Strange movie – a movie which just doesn’t fit in with the current Marvel cosmology. Then again, there are things that I wouldn’t expect that seem to be working their way into the movies now, so who knows!

I’ve been looking at the Marvel movies on IMDb, which might be a bad idea, and might be a whole lot of spoilers. However, this also paints an interesting picture of the upcoming films, specifically of the characters that are going to be in them.

Also, it leaves a number of characters on the table to – like Doctor Strange – maybe end up in Agents of SHIELD one day? A number of characters, like the Guardians of the Galaxy, need a large budget for the CG to make them. Some characters, however, are more human or exist on Earth, and could make it easily onto the show. After all, Coulson’s mission is to find heroes, so Whedon shouldn’t have to invent all of the heroes new, right?

So, spoilers to follow, some of which I probably don’t even understand for what they are myself!

Doctor Strange – A Movie We’re (Sadly) Not Going To See

There’s a lot of characters, teams, and general intellectual property being tapped by Marvel Comics right now for movies. I feel like this is easiest to say given that Guardians of the Galaxy is going to be a thing – I’m not sure I had heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy before that. Now there’s talk of the Marvel Phase 3 Ant Man movie.

But one long-time Avenger who I just don’t see making their way onto the screen anytime soon is Doctor Strange. But given that, I still feel like it would be fun to cast the character. And actually, for a stand-along movie separate from other franchises, a Doctor Strange movie could be fun. So let me explore for a moment why I don’t see this movie happening, and then let me give you some of my casting ideas for the Doctor – Doctor Strange!

Busy

The Avengers called – he’s busy.
