First World Relationship Problems

P and I are on vacation, so this will be short and sweet, and hopefully funny and relatable.

We’ve been hanging out with a lot of our friends back home this week, and I keep hearing about the same relationship problem from all of our friends. It’s one that I’ve experienced with P as well, and I’m sure it’s one that has plagued many a reader of this blog.

That is, getting hooked on the same Netflix shows.

At first, this seems like more of a blessing than a curse. It’s always better when both partners want to sit and watch the same show. Who doesn’t want their significant other to be as excited as they are about spending a Friday night bingeing Doctor Who or Firefly on Netflix?

It only becomes a problem when you have different schedules, or start watching a show solo that your S.O. happens to watch with you one night, and suddenly you can’t keep watching without them because they’re hooked too. P and I ran into this problem a lot the past six months when he had a hectic schedule and I was home by myself a lot. I originally started watching Arrow on my own, and suddenly he watched a few episodes and it became “our” show and not “my” show.

I started trying to watch shows I figured he wouldn’t be into (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, for example) but lo and behold he’d get roped into them too and again I’d find myself unable to watch them when he wasn’t home with me. I’ve heard the same from other friends, including one who started trying to watch Gilmore Girls and her S.O. got into it too, and sure enough she couldn’t watch it solo anymore.

As far as problems in a relationship go, it’s definitely the best one to have. I found it hilarious that I heard so many stories of this issue this week while hanging out with girlfriends. We all started to swap ideas for shows we could watch without our S.O. to try to find ways around it. As P tells me though, I pick awesome TV shows, so it’s probably a problem that will continue.

Any suggestions on shows to try to watch when your S.O. isn’t home? Or better yet, more suggestions of shows to watch together?

Trying Netflix Again…

Daredevil

With the arrival of Geek Baby and some need for potential additional entertainment, David and I decided to try Netflix for a while (online only). We were able to do the one month free, and are paying for it now. One of the really great things about Netflix is being able to watch the original content (Daredevil, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, etc.); as well as access to a lot of shows that we have not been able to watch yet.

We both had Netflix early on and dropped it because we just were not using it that much. In getting it again there are some things that we are excited about as listed above, but it does not seem as good as we remember. One thing in particular that has been difficult is how much data it uses, but the other piece is that it just is not as user friendly as I remember. We are still trying to evaluate whether we want to keep Netflix or not, but can say that we are not thrilled with it.

Here’s a Labor Day Marathon for You – Frankenstein, MD

It’s a holiday here in the US, at least: Labor Day, which, ironic with its name, is a day where we tend not to labor. Seasonally, it also functions as the sign for the “end of summer,” which the weather today seems to be indicating for us as well…

I hope you are having a relaxed day, maybe watching and marathoning some shows. Oh, what’s that? You’re looking for something new to watch?

BAM!

Frankenstein, MD! We’ve only just found this web series, which is now 6 episodes in. It’s from the people who brought us the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, and from PBS who seems to be doing good stuff online, and co-starring Steve Zaragoza, one of the great hosts over on Sourcefed Nerd! Needless to say, we’re loving it, and it’ll be interesting to see where it goes.

Our guess is reanimation…

New Year’s Eve Marathons

It is that time again!! New Years Eve is upon us and it is time to decide how you are going to wile away the hours until midnight. David and I will actually be spending the evening traveling so that we will be leading up to New Year’s on the plane. If we were not traveling there are a lot of ideas of what we could be doing. So here is our suggestion for some great geeky plans to lead in to the New Year.  Continue reading
