The Super Secret Origin of the Azor Ahai Myth in Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is a sprawling fantasy epic that carefully blends grounded medieval realpolitik with magic and supernatural elements. George RR Martin has gone on record about his inspiration for the politics of the series: the real-world dynastic battles of the War of the Roses, with Starks and Lannisters being analogues for ye olde Englande’s northern Yorks and rich Lancasters.

But what is the origin of the supernatural mono-myth that seems to dominate the story? I’m talking about the story of Azor Ahai and related myths that are so prevalent in Westeros and Essos.

Reaction – Season 6 Game of Thrones

GoT_season_6_official_posterI think my short reaction to the latest season of Game of Thrones is just OH MY GOSH!! This season just blew me away. After season 5 I was slightly disappointed in the series as a whole. They had done some good things, but in season 5 the show just felt a little lost. This season they really took the show and the story to the next level.

Now a couple of my favorite things about this season has been the women in power, and the reveal of some great fan theories. The female characters in this season have owned every episode that they have been in and it has been fantastic.

I think the big issue I have with this season is that they threw out any concept of time continuity and everything happened at the speed of plot. Now this kept the pace really exciting and with a limited number of episodes left in the series it really helped move the story forward, but there were definitely some ridiculous moments as a result. At the same time I am super excited to see where they take this story in the next couple of seasons! (Spoilers for Game of Thrones for season 6 after the jump.)

Cersei Lannister, the Lioness with No Teeth

The new seasons of Game of Thrones is about to start, so I thought it might be a good idea to look at another character that we love to hate, Cersei; only daughter of Tywin Lannister, wife to Robert Baratheon, and mother to Joffery. She is such an interesting character because she craves power, but as a woman in this world does not really have it. The other problem is that she thinks she knows how to play the game, but she really ends up a pawn pretending to be a Queen. This means that Cersei often finds herself in situations that she did not expect or really anticipate. She underestimates way too many people and then overestimates others. It is kind of a tragedy how miserably she usually fails because she thinks she sees everything, when she really doesn’t. (Spoilers for Game of Thrones the book and movie after the jump.)
