I remember thoroughly enjoying the new Star Trek movie when it first came out. It has been a little bit since I had watched it so today I decided to take an opportunity to do so. Watching it again I am remembered how good that movie was. There could have been so much that went wrong with that movie because how do you reboot a franchise that is so beloved and already had so much story that was considered cannon? They really did keep the things that are loved about Star Trek, but put a new twist on the story. Now this is not to say that the movie is perfect, but it did start the new movies off on a strong foot.

I don’t know how many of you have seen or remember the movie Doom starring Karl Urban and Dwayne Johnson, but personally it is an underrated movie. I admit it is cheese tastic at some points, but I think that is some of its charm. Now some of the reason this movie can pull anything off is because of Karl Urban and Dwayne Johnson. It is early in their careers, but in some ways taps in to what each of the does best. The other great part of this movie is that it feels like a movie based on a first person shooter game. Doing movies based on video games often does not turn out that well. Either the movie takes itself too seriously and just fails or it does not have the edge that you need to really pull off the story that a video game often entails. Doom really balances these elements perfectly. Continue reading
Yesterday Holly posted her best of for 2013, and today it’s mine! There were some tough choices, and some easier ones. We’re trying to mainly stick to things new in 2013, but really, we’re focused on new to us. Most of this is from 2013, though!
We selected a few major categories: Movies, TV Shows, YouTube Channel, Book, Comic or Graphic Novel, Music, Video Game (here we divided into single-player and multi-player), and Board Game. Most of these things we’ve also written posts on, as you might imagine!
We’ve run this blog almost a year now, so we’ve been thinking and writing about this stuff all year, and it’s nice to reflect back on it. Let me know what you think of my choices in the comments below!
Almost Human opened up this past weekend with two episodes. The pilot aired on Sunday night then another episode aired Monday night. It was not a typical two part series opener because the stories for each episode did not connect, but it did allow the viewer more time to get acquainted with this new world. Going in to this show I was super excited because it stars Karl Urban and I think he is an under-appreciated actor. If you have seen him in Dredd you will understand.
Almost Human opens up showing us Detective John Kennex during an operation. During the operation things are going badly. The androids working with the police keep telling them that rescuing certain cops is a bad move and expending resources to rescue one person is not worth the risk. We find out that the person Kennex was risking his life for was his partner. In the opening we see that the android runs off because Kennex’s partner is considered too far gone to save. When Kennex tries to pull him out himself the partner is killed and Kennex’s leg is blown off. We start out with a pretty good idea of why Kennex would not want to be partnered with an android.
My short reaction is that I am really enjoying the show. They spent a good amount of time giving us some background into the main characters and giving us background in to the world that the story is happening in. There were a lot of elements that had to be brought in and done in a way that makes sense to the audience. I think they pulled it off. Continue reading
I was recently mentioning to Holly that I had identified the right actor to play a character for a movie franchise that, as far as I know, is not actually in production. That franchise would be Stephen King’s Dark Tower.
I have an idea for someone to play the main character, Roland. I mentioned it, and Holly came back with another good match. So I have a couple of thoughts for you… and maybe I’ll explore actors for a few other characters as well.
I should mention, I am now also looking and see that I am not the first to explore this topic; it is, in fact, a strong point of discussion over on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1648190/board/threads/
