Verdict: Selfie, Early Release Pilot

Okay, so this was a show that from the previews I had basically already written off. Now I had heard that the pilot for Selfie had been released, but just could not see watching it. Then David and I found it on Hulu looking for something else and we decided we would give it a shot and see if it completely annoyed us after 5 minutes. Amazingly we made it through the entire episode and I have to say I don’t know if I had such low expectations that the only way to go was up, but it was not that bad. I am even willing to give it another chance and watch the next episode when it comes out in a month.

I have to say the trailer honestly showed the most annoying moments of Eliza and we miss some of the more human moments that we can all relate to. I think the two things this show has going for it are the two leads, Karen Gillan and John Cho, and an overarching commentary on the overuse of technology.

Marvel Movie Casting – Thoughts from IMDb

Recently I gave you my thoughts about a Doctor Strange movie – a movie which just doesn’t fit in with the current Marvel cosmology. Then again, there are things that I wouldn’t expect that seem to be working their way into the movies now, so who knows!

I’ve been looking at the Marvel movies on IMDb, which might be a bad idea, and might be a whole lot of spoilers. However, this also paints an interesting picture of the upcoming films, specifically of the characters that are going to be in them.

Also, it leaves a number of characters on the table to – like Doctor Strange – maybe end up in Agents of SHIELD one day? A number of characters, like the Guardians of the Galaxy, need a large budget for the CG to make them. Some characters, however, are more human or exist on Earth, and could make it easily onto the show. After all, Coulson’s mission is to find heroes, so Whedon shouldn’t have to invent all of the heroes new, right?

So, spoilers to follow, some of which I probably don’t even understand for what they are myself!

The Hat Trick or You Look Familiar

This post is really combining two different tv tropes. One is the Hat Trick, which I know mostly due to Joss Whedon. It originally started out as actors that have appeared in all three of Joss’ shows (Buffy, Angel, Firefly), but with his every growing list of accomplishments that number of hat tricks keeps growing and at some point you might be able to go beyond just three appearances.

This then could be compared to the TV Trope “You Look Familiar” where a guest actor who maybe had a bit part returns to then play a full time character. On TV Tropes they note that this is often the case with Star Trek, a show where being able to wear a mask or makeup you could really have anyone behind there, so why not reuse an actor who worked well.

I really love it when you do not quite realize they have been reused until you come back and watch older episodes and are surprised to find this actor that you have seen playing one character suddenly playing someone completely different on the same show. Now the Hat Tricks for Joss Whedon have become a game amongst the fans to see who can spot them. So here are some of my favorite Hat Tricks / You Look Familiar actors and moments. Continue reading
