Are You Watching Lip Sync Battle?

One of our recent finds on YouTube is Lip Sync Battle, a show that needs a little explanation – but also doesn’t. The easy part is that they get two celebrities on and have them battle it out, Lip Syncing a song, and the crowd picks the winner. It’s on Spike, and hosted by LL Cool J.

And so they opened with Dwayne Johnson versus Jimmy Fallon.

Yes, that’s the Rock singing Taylor Swift. Alright, so they had us hooked.

It’s based on a segment that Jimmy Fallon ran occasionally (thus bringing him in to kick off the stand-alone show). Fallon’s segment is based on an idea by Emily Blunt and her husband. Another reason to love Emily Blunt, as Holly will tell you!

Given that it’s also based on Jimmy Fallon’s success, they are of course posting full videos of the songs on YouTube. So even though we don’t have Spike, we have this show, which is great.

They added an online-only element to the show, as well. So they brought in YouTubers to run this – and that’s the last piece that caught our attention. One of their hosts? Elliott Morgan. We’d wondered where he went when he was suddenly no longer on Mashable.

So after the break, check out the pre-show with Elliott Morgan, and then you can watch to see how round two of the Lip Sync Battle worked out between The Rock and Jimmy Fallon!

Amazing Spider-Man 2: A Review & A LitFlix

It’s been a long time coming now, I suppose, and for that I am sorry. However, it’s been hard to figure out how to talk about this movie, to figure out even what comics to read. And we did not see the movie until a few weeks after it was out, rather than rushing in – in part, because I was dragging my feet on reading the comics.

The comics I finally have read, to even tell you which ones, would be to spoil the movie. I was first looking at some of the origin comics for the villains: Electro, Green Goblin. The Sinister Six. However, these comics don’t give us the plot to the movie. In many ways, that seems like something they are building for themselves, in many ways. But then you have them harkening right back to the comics at times as well.

Very confusing. So this is part review, part comics-comparison as a LitFlix, for The Amazing Spider-Man 2! Spoilers to come, but first I will talk about the film and franchise a bit in a larger way before I get into the nittier-grittier bits!

Movies That Surprised Us

After seeing Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and Warm Bodies these past couple of weeks, I started thinking about movies that have taken me by surprise. Now, I saw Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and Warm Bodies in theaters so I at least thought I would enjoy them, but there are other movies that I see the preview for and I think, meh. Down the line I will sometimes end up renting these movies just to see what they are about, and sometimes I am pleasantly surprised at what I find.

This does not mean that suddenly these movies are fabulous creations of cinema, but rather that they were good in ways I was not expecting. So here are 5 movies that took me by surprise. (No spoiler warning: I want you to maybe check these movies out, so I am avoiding spoilers). Continue reading
