Looking Forward to Dragon Age: Inquisition

I’ve been playing more Dragon Age 2, with the plan of finally beating it before the next game comes out! With thinking about that, I am realizing we haven’t really commented on what’s going on with Dragon Age really since we talked about Dragon Age Keep. We’ve been looking forward to this since the early days of the blog!

We had fears about this game – mainly about what consoles it would be on. And then fears, based on our experience of the Bioware games in recent years. But despite all of that, I am hopeful for the game! Not much else to say as an introduction, so… have this trailer!

V is for Varric Tethras

VIt’s certainly a good week to have Dragon Age on the mind, with a new trailer out and a release date set. But Varric was always my plan for the letter V – the sort of character who makes you almost appreciate Bards. Almost.

Varric could likely talk himself out of any situation. And if that doesn’t work, he can always turn to Bianca, his clockwork crossbow. He keeps up almost constant banter through Dragon Age 2, shows interest in all of the different PCs. His loyalty is fascinating, as well: it seems almost absolute, but it is a loyalty to the story of you and your deeds, more than it is a loyalty to you, as the Champion of Kirkwall. He’s a fun character, and confirmed to be coming back in Dragon Age 3 out on October 7!

Catching Up – Video Games We’ve Been Playing Since We Got Our PS3

I feel like we’ve played a lot of video games lately – I think we moved into a video-game phase when we bought a new (for us) console, the PS3. And I don’t feel like we’ve written much about the games we’ve played lately, because we’ve almost moved too quickly through them. We’ve mentioned them in passing, as we’ve started them. Or as we finished.

And maybe that’s okay, as many of these games have been out a while. Maybe the point where talking about them is interesting has passed. However, I’m sure there are many games you, faithful reader, are also considering and haven’t played yet. So maybe we’ll spark a thought for you.

Lightning Returns CoverLightning Returns arrived today (finally!) and I have a feeling it is going to consume our time, and pull us away from other games. Which is too bad, but it also means I kind of want to get these games out of my system before we move completely on! So here’s a lightning round (pun intended?) of the games we’ve been playing lately, my quick thoughts and recommendations on them. Onward!

Steam Console – My Next Console?

I read a review the other day that got me thinking about what my next console is going to be. I discussed how one of my fundamental questions for a new console is around Dragon Age Inquisition, and how it isn’t going to allow for me to necessarily bring my save game world forward in the form of an import.

I’ve also talked about the fundamental question, do I buy a PC just to game with? Holly and I talk about how we have an Apple ecology in our home, and our main Microsoft product is our X-Box 360. A good one to have, to be sure, and with enough content for the moment to carry us out at least another year – and add to that the games we’re waiting to buy when the price drops, and a few remaining releases for the system like Lego Marvel Super Heroes and Lightning Returns, and what do we need a new console for anytime soon? Or the games we could play instead on a PC?

While I had heard about the existence of the Steam Console elsewhere, it was this article on Gamemoir that really got me thinking: http://gamemoir.com/2013/10/08/can-valves-steam-machine-rock-the-console-market/ Maybe this is more than just an interesting new device from Valve. Maybe this is my next console. Continue reading

Bioshock Infinite and the Statute of Limitations

This hasn’t been a great year for me playing videogames. Been so busy, so many things going on (not least of which is Comparative Geeks…) that I have a number of games that are incomplete. I have mentioned my thoughts on Diablo 3, which Holly and I should beat here at some point soon on the console (which I have also reviewed). I wanted to get Dragon Age 2 beaten, but still have not moved past the decision point I wrote about before (plus, how much will my save game matter now?). I still need to beat Final Fantasy XIII-2, though like Dragon Age 2, I have seen the end because Holly beat it. I am close to beating Final Fantasy Dimensions, but still haven’t. KotOR I have reached the point where it’s more open-ended where I go… twice. Holly beat Portal 2 recently, and I still need to finish the single player for that.

Really just a lot on the table.

So what game have I been playing? I have finally been getting back to Bioshock Infinite and working on beating it, and the further I get, the harder it is to put down! I am glad I did pick it back up, because it is phenomenal. There’s so much to say about it!

Winner of over 80 awards... so it says on my preorder copy of the game. Those are awards they got before the game came out.

And yet, I don’t feel like I can. Every time I see someone start a conversation about Bioshock Infinite, they cut themselves off. They’ve been respectful of spoilers. And so I feel like I need to be too – because the game experience, unspoiled, is fantastic. So spoilers not ahead for Bioshock Infinite! Continue reading
