Ticket to Ride

appIntroI liked Ticket to Ride, I had played, but not owned the game and enjoyed playing. I recently have fallen in love with Ticket to Ride in large part to being able to play the iPad app. David can tell you I am on the app a lot and will sometimes whip through a game in ten minutes. With the computer making the decisions the game goes much faster. It is such a great introductory game that is simple to explain, but still so much fun to play.

There is competition and strategy with some luck, but if you do not pick your cards well you are not going to do well. The board game is great because you have the little train pieces that you place on the board and you move your piece around the outside to count your points. The app is nice because it is portable and easy to play at any time, but it definitely has a different feel to playing the in real life board game. Continue reading

To Fund or Not To Fund That is the Question

So if you have not been paying attention to any geeky blogs you might have missed that Rob Thomas and Kirsten Bell have started a Kickstarter to fund a Veronica Mars movie. Or the fact that they met their $2 million goal in the first day, so now everything is just bonus. Part of me is excited about the idea of a Veronica Mars movie because I watched the show when it was on originally, but I have never given to a Kickstarter before.

The fact that they met their funding in one day just made me think about how people spend there money in general and what makes people support any Kickstarter. I have seen other Kickstarters, but nothing that has driven me to give money. Even with the Veronica Mars movie, I question whether I really want to give money. Some of the problem when I think about giving money to a Kickstarter is thinking about whether there would be a better use for the money, such as a charity. At the same time it is also important to have independent funding for artists and designers because a lot of larger corporations make it really hard to create something new. Continue reading
