First Impressions: Saga

Cover to Saga Vol. 1

I know I am a little late to the game, but I just finished reading Saga Volume 1. So, I thought I would take a little bit of time to talk about what I think. The beginning of a story is crucial because they need to give you enough that you understand what is going on and want more, but not so much that you feel like you already know what is going to happen. Saga definitely starts out strong and I hope it continues strong. They introduce a lot of the characters, the politics, the history, and the main story line in a way that does not reveal all, but reveals enough that I do not feel completely lost.

One thing I am loving about the story is that it is simultaneously a big and a little story. The big story is about two races at war with each other across the galaxy. The two sides fight on every world, except their home ones because they are neighbors. At the same time it is also about the story of two people on opposite sides of the conflict trying to find a place for themselves and their child. I am still early on so I have no idea what is going to happen, but some of the concepts and ideas I have seen so far definitely make me interested to read more. R.I.P.D, a Delayed Reaction

Initially the movie R.I.P.D. sounded interesting when the first trailers came out, but as reviews started coming out it sounded less and less appealing. So we decided not to go see it when it first came out, but recently it came out on HBO so we decided to give it a try. I don’t know if I can adequately describe my opinion partly because, even while watching the movie, it was like it just existed. I will try and break down the problems because the concept seems fairly interesting, although a bit of an MIB rip off, it could have been a fun time. It just really did not turn out that well.  Continue reading

Locke and Key, Finished

Locke and Key Volume 6

In this last week David and I finally completed the last volume in the graphic novel series Locke and Key. Early I did a sort of initial reaction post, which you can read. Now that I have finished I wanted to do a much more spoiler heavy look at Locke and Key. If you have not read the series then please do not continue because you want to go in to this spoiler free. One of the great things is just discovering the story and creations that are presented. The other part is that up until the end of the story I was not entirely sure how this was going to end up. In the end the final volume surprised me multiple times and brought the story to the next level. So again, if you have not read the comic do not read beyond this point if you do not want to be spoiled. (Major Spoilers for Locke and Key after the jump.) Continue reading
