Three Years of Comparative Geeks!

It was three years ago this week that Holly and I started a little blog over here on this corner of the Internet. We had a few series in mind – like LitFlix – and a growing list of post ideas. Post ideas that I’m still working my way through… it’s tough when the list grows faster than it shrinks!

I am happy to say the blog is still going strong after all this time. With the help of friends – friends we knew and friends we’ve made – we’ve kept going even through vacations, even through having a baby. I’ve changed jobs a few times. Life has happened. But we’re still here, and we’re still posting.

There’s plenty more to come, but I guess if I had one thing to ask today it would be, what would you like to see more of from Comparative Geeks? Let us know in the comments below!

Happy New Year! Comparative Geeks thoughts for 2016

IMG_0319

Happy New Year! We don’t really have big news like last year, but the New Year is a good time to look back and reflect, to look forward and plan. Definitely plenty of that going on here.

Reflection

What the latter half of 2015 showed us was that, even with the Geek Baby, we want to and can keep blogging. I would like to think we’ve kept at least some of our quality and consistency. Hopefully that will just improve with time, but at its most basic – we can do it.

More importantly, what the first half of 2015 showed us was that we have a strong community around us and supporting us. We ran the blog for 6 weeks on guest posts by a variety of people and on a variety of topics. Opinion pieces, old stuff, new stuff, large-level reviews… just a bunch of really great stuff. This post has links to all of it, and I highly recommend checking it out. We’ve had some additional contributions from folks later in the year – and have even added a full-time weekly contributor, Julia, the newest comparative geek!

There were some things that didn’t work this year, sure. For one, we didn’t create a great communication system for all our contributors and guest posters – so it’s hard to tap them on a continual basis. For another, some of our series have just kind of fallen. I still owe everyone a Geek 501 page that I’ve promised – it’s about halfway done. And our LitFlix have really fallen to the wayside – more on our thoughts on this to come in the next few weeks. And overall, I had a lot more thoughts of what I could accomplish this year than what I really did.

Future

So looking ahead, I’m excited for what we can do this year. We’re coming up on three years of Comparative Geeks – it’s hard to believe! Thank you to everyone who’s been here with us through this. We feel we’re at the point that it’s time to consider moving forward, moving onward – growing.

We’re going to take our time with it, but our hope is that by about July, we’ll be running a self-hosted blog. The archives here likely would not come along for the ride, so this blog would stay here and live on, but without necessarily updates.

As to a self-hosted site, and the things that go with it, we have a lot of thoughts. One would be the webcomic I’ve been saying I want to do. I had some good starts before I completely fell off the wagon… And the fact that I’m not hating what I am creating is the most important thing. I might like my writing, but my drawing? Coming to terms with that has been huge. There are other things we’re considering too, that should be fun.

However, the number one thing that we want to see in a grown and improved blog is you – so let us know in the comments what would be good ways to have folks follow along to a new blog, or better yet what would work for you. And the thing we’re going to want too is contributors – to take what we accomplished early this year, drawing all those bloggers together, and channel that as a long-term thing. To magnify what we’re all doing by doing together, in one space, that can be a one-stop for people to check it out. So spend some time thinking about that, and feel free to comment on that as well!

From our family to yours, a Happy New Year indeed!

Weekend Coffee Share – Time Runs Out Edition

If we were having coffee, I’d ask you where the time went. We’ve reached the end of my time home with the Geek Baby. We’re traveling for Thanksgiving this coming week (look out for some great contributor material!), and then the following week we’re working on transitioning into a home care situation.

And it’s not like the Geek Baby is all grown up and saving China, but it’s still sad to be at the end of this time I’ve had. We’re of course super grateful that we’ve found somewhere at all for her to be watched – one of us staying home full time would not be at all economically easy.

Thanks student loans.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you there’s a lot that I thought I was going to be able to get done during these several months. I’ve talked about much of it before. Well, none of it really went well.

For instance, there was my Warmachine Journeyman League. The League ended and… I was last place. Well, I guess second to last – there was someone who played one game. Some of it was most people played their most games the first week, and I missed the extra games session they were all at because I was working. After that, we played more points and the games were longer, and could play fewer in a week – so there was never a chance to catch up on games. Meanwhile, my starting army (chosen for me because it’s based on what they sell as the starting pack) was awful and I was losing all those games anyway… and winning later. Wasn’t enough to catch up at all.

And I got no painting done, which is funny since I got some done in advance of the League starting… I didn’t even get my new stuff I got for my birthday fully built. Although, started on that…

Then there was the Superhero Entertainments class that Holly and I were taking online. Yeah, that ended up not happening past week two for us. There’s another session in the future, so who knows, maybe we’ll take it yet. Interesting – but finding the time to watch, take notes, visit the forums, do the quizzes… plus, watching stuff together it only counted as one of us watching stuff and they track that for completion, so we were going and having to basically have a device watch all the videos for us a second time.

Speaking of classes, there’s a class I’m doing online now as well for professional development that my work paid for. I’m at least off to an okay start there – though I’m going to have to do all of next week’s while traveling, pretty much. And I haven’t made it to the chat sessions yet as they’ve been the same time as doctor’s appointments for the Geek Baby.

Then there’s the sketching NaNoWriMo I was working on. Well, it was off to an okay start. Sketches, anyway, not completed drawings like I was hoping. I’m realizing that’s a lot of process – and I see why professionally it’s done by many people, and why webcomics have a spaced out schedule. There’s a lot to it.

And I eventually fell behind, discouraged, and stopped.

I was playing Kingdom Hearts 2… Fell off the completionist wagon there, and moved on to a variety of things. TV, where I finished my long-haul re-watching of Star Trek: The Next Generation at least. Oh, and watched Firefly and Serenity again. Then back to games and played a little Diablo 3 with the expansion… and then Fallout 4 most recently.

We have a stack of board games that we’ve bought, intending to play and finding them at a good price… that have yet to be played. We’ve had to stop ourselves from considering any more, really, until we give these a go…

And not a lot of reading even happened, though I’m hoping for a bit of reading time as we travel. Along with doing classwork. And trying to maybe get something written for a university publication by December 1. Oh, and vacationing.

If we were having coffee, I would fall into the cliche of having to say that watching a baby is a lot of work. We all know that as a haha, yep, that’s a thing sort of a fact… but in actual practice? Like, a LOT of work. TV and gaming tended to happen during naps, often with her asleep on me (or Holly, before me).

We’ve kept the blog going, at least… but any growth plans, including stronger coordination with the contributors, has not happened. Sorry, contributors. If you have any blog post ideas, please, I’m all ears. Or, well, fingers and eyes on the computer, I guess?

If we were having coffee, and thinking about contributors, I would point out that we haven’t been the only ones busy. Though I of course haven’t been doing much blog reading either, I am in touch with a number of other bloggers. Many are at the seasons in their life where their blogging plans are changing, or they are starting whole new blogs. Things have gone quiet over on Sourcerer.

And there are things I could have been trying to cram in – freelance work I was thinking I could do while home. I guess it’s good – I never really heard back from any of my clients on doing stuff either. So I guess I didn’t have an opportunity to find out if I could have pulled that off…

It’s like not just we have gotten really busy – everyone has. A lot of our peers and friends, people our age, are all starting to have kids as well. The Geek Baby is suddenly going to be just one of the oldest of a large group of kids. But that also means a likely change in the seasons of our life, as we move towards kiddo get-togethers and play days, things like that.

Where did the time go? Do you know?

Weekend Coffee Share – Birthday Edition

Birthday Coffee

If we were having coffee, I would tell you it’s my birthday!

As has been my birthday tradition, today I get to write about whatever I want. In many respects, this differs in no way from any other day on the blog, but whatever.

So I would probably tell you about my plans going forward. Life plans. Dream-accomplishing plans. Read on for those – I’d love some input!

October Plans on Comparative Geeks

It’s been a bit since we talked plans here, so let’s talk about what’s up here on Comparative Geeks. The Geek Baby has not completely destroyed our ability to blog, so we’re keeping going!

Wait, that's not the Geek Baby...

Wait, that’s not the Geek Baby…

  • You may have noticed the Weekend Coffee Share posts on Saturdays – this is a fun personal blogging feature that runs on a lot of blogs, so you can get to know folks and what’s up in their lives! We’ve turned to this to talk about some of our life and baby stuff.
  • We have not returned to a 6-days-a-week schedule with adding back Saturdays – so we’ve been randomly taking a day off during the week. Basically, whenever the Geek Baby makes it clear we’re not getting a post done…
  • We’re still running contributor posts, just not a ton. If any contributors are reading this, hi! We’ll take any post ideas you’ve got floating around 🙂
  • We’ve got a whole lot of new TV show posts (and maybe some returning seasons thoughts) to go as the fall season starts.
  • We’ve still got a lot of comics from our huge stack of comics from the library to get through! Some nice, unexpected finds. Stuff we might not have found normally.
  • And we’ll try to keep some posts in our normal series and all going.

There are a couple of projects that I would like to get up to in October as well. Since I am home with the Geek Baby right now, in theory, I can find some time, right?

  • My Warmachine gaming group is running a Journeyman League starting in October. The idea of a Journeyman League is to start up a new army, or get some new stuff going. It starts with the smallest game type, and each week gets bigger. There’s points for playing games – and points for painting. I would like to get some painting going with that, so watch for painting update pictures on our Instagram!
  • I really want to work on my drawing skills. It’s something I did a lot of when I was younger, and then basically completely dropped when I felt like I wasn’t good enough. Reading stuff like Understanding Comics has me thinking that I can do it too! So I am committing, here and now, to a sketch a day shared on Instagram.

So, yeah, it’s going to get busy on our Instagram, since I’ll also probably have pictures of some games played and such. I’d love feedback on anything and everything you see – most of them will be shared on our Facebook or on my Twitter, if you’re looking for other ways to let me know what you think!

Oh, and one other thing. It’s my birthday coming up again, and I always like to do particularly fun posts then – like my Stephen King’s 19 post, or last year’s post on being an adult (which makes more sense now that you know I was thinking about the Geek Baby…). This year I hope it’s a good one too – tune in the 10th to find out!
