So when looking on Amazon, and trying to finish an order (used to be for free shipping, now more from trying to round out a gift card…), I usually look back through my ever-increasing wish list of board games and card games. Good stuff – some we’ve seen on TableTop, some we’ve played, some that are recommended.
And then, just a huge amount of expansions.
Expansions to board games is a growing and exploding market. They tend to add a lot to a game – not only in terms of content and new stuff and new rules and options, but replayability. Suddenly there’s so much going on with the game – often a bunch that you haven’t experienced, or haven’t experienced in combination – that it’s always great.
Recently we realized – we don’t actually have a complete game set. Well, maybe for Miskatonic School for Girls… we got the expansion for that.
Though we haven’t played this expansion yet…
In other words, we have this whole game because it only has one expansion! That’s a really low amount for games anymore. So let me consider a few that we could pursue because we are close or interested – then I’d love to know what you think, or if you have any complete games, in the comments below!

While we haven’t been able to do as much this year with Platypus Con as we did last year (just going to throw the Geek Baby under the bus here and blame her…), we’re still excited for the convention – and it’s this coming weekend! The busy event organizer took a few minutes and answered some questions about the Con, now in its second year.
You can find more about Platypus Con on their site, Platypus Gaming, and you can buy tickets here.

I know we’ve been talking a lot about Christmas presents, and getting things for the myriad geeks in our life. So you still have shopping to do… what do you get the Geek in your life, here at the last minute?
I’m figuring it’s too late to order online, you need to go somewhere and get something good. I have a few ideas for you. Let everybody know in the comments if you have more ideas to add!

David and I have talked about a couple of board games that we play on our iPads, but the more we have travelled with them the more that I have fallen in love with them. We have created a considerable collection of board games between our two iPads and the benefits for travel has been incredible. Most travel is just the two of us and having to bring games to try and play, on airports, in airplanes, or even just relaxing on vacation would take a lot of space. The space issue also means that there is a limited number that you can bring. We do still have somewhat of a space issue, but that is just how much we can fit on our iPads.
Now playing on the iPad is very different from playing the normal board game. So if you have the ability to play the physical board game there is something about holding the physical pieces or being able to see the whole board which just feels very different. At the same time the convenience of the iPad board games is really amazing. Continue reading

Mobile gaming has opened up our lives for having a game with us. Gone are the days where we had to remember to bring a Sodoku book with us, or a newspaper for the crossword puzzle. Gone even are the days many people my age grew up with, of having to carry around a Game Boy for entertainment.
I mean, there are moments in our lives where a little gaming is right, right? Like waiting in lines. Or when traveling. Waking up in the morning or winding down at night. Good for children who can play while perhaps other things are happening. Mobile gaming – in its many and varied forms – is not a new idea. But with our Smart devices, it’s easier than ever.
Now there’s even a new Nintendo system that looks far more like the merging of a Nintendo DS and a tablet than it does like much else. How we view mobile gaming is changing. But even as I play some games on these hand-helds, they don’t all work the same way as each other. And one keeps bringing me back. I’m going to consider mobile gaming just a little bit, and then talk about my favorite one, but then really I’d also like to hear from you – what are your go-to mobile games? Continue reading
