Happy Friday: X-Men Apocalypse First Official Trailer

As CompGeek Siblings, David and I grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons together, especially X-Men. Personally I’ve been incredibly happy with the First Class movies (more so than I was with the first trilogy; as much as I love some of the actors, the second two movies fell a bit flat for me) and so I was really excited to see the first trailer for Apocalypse. The first two movies were fantastically done, and some of the new faces in this one have me super stoked (Sophie Turner as Jean Grey? Olivia Munn as Psylocke? Eeee!) I can’t wait for this to come out!

Life, With Memes

Hello readers! Holly and I have a lot going on right now in our lives, both blogging and otherwise. We’ve hit a point where we need to do a lot of work on our house in a short amount of time. On top of that, it’s a heavy season for LitFlix – we have two of the movies coming out next weekend (which we’re still reading for!), and I still need to write up two from here in May. That was the plan for tonight, but that fell through.

I couldn’t focus enough this evening to write something like that, which involves thinking back both to the comics and the movie, but there was a bit of thought that I could do. Both Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past have me thinking of some of the situations in terms of memes. So I took a little time this evening and made those memes – I hope you like!

Marvel Owns My Time

I’ve been trying to keep it down to one Marvel-based post a week. I swear.

However, lately it seems like Marvel just keeps on giving. Or I keep finding something great. Avengers work by Jonathan Hickman. Hawkeye by Matt Fraction. New trailers, like the extended one for Captain America: The Winter Soldier before Thor: The Dark World. Lego Marvel Super Heroes.

The more of this that comes out, the more I remember that I used to be a big Marvel fan, and am being made one again. Disney’s plan of bringing in new fans by purchasing Marvel (and then Lucas Films…) seems to be a really good idea. Because they’ve snagged me again, anyway. Well played, Marvel.

The Once and Future Nightcrawler

When I decided to get back into comics, I immediately went one place. I looked up my favorite character, Nightcrawler. A great character in my youth, reading Excalibur until it ended… A great character in Ultimate X-Men, where he is a product of the Weapon X project… A great character in the video games, where he can practically solo bosses…

So I returned to the Marvel Universe to find that Nightcrawler died.

I’d like to do a character study of Nightcrawler, but there’s a lot of history there. Like with Wolverine, I think I will focus mainly on lately in the comics, and about what Marvel has done with my hopes and dreams around this character.

A Character Study of Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants

I recently came across a lit of the top 100 Comic Book Villains from IGN. I was working my way through, seeing who I knew, agreeing and disagreeing with the various rankings for the villains. The top ten is pretty excellent, but the top spot is a surprise. I’ll give you a minute to look at the list, go ahead.

Okay, you might have guessed from my post topic, but beating out the Joker for the top spot was Magneto. What is it about this villain which so fascinates us? Is he truly a villain – or a victim? Is he right in all of his fears? After all, none of this tension has been resolved yet – in the comics, in the movies, anywhere.

And what about the group he surrounds himself with – his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants? Any group that includes “Evil” in the name is problematic, because does the truly evil person consider themselves to be so? Or is this Magneto just playing into society’s expectations – calling themselves evil because the humans will call them so?
