Re-watching the New Star Trek Movie

Star TrekI remember thoroughly enjoying the new Star Trek movie when it first came out. It has been a little bit since I had watched it so today I decided to take an opportunity to do so. Watching it again I am remembered how good that movie was. There could have been so much that went wrong with that movie because how do you reboot a franchise that is so beloved and already had so much story that was considered cannon? They really did keep the things that are loved about Star Trek, but put a new twist on the story. Now this is not to say that the movie is perfect, but it did start the new movies off on a strong foot.

New Albums, Old Artists, Sia and Panic at the Disco

So this past month I have discovered new albums by some of my favorite artists. One is the latest album by Sia This is Acting, who I have adored ever since I first heard “Chandelier”. This new album is just as good and I really love the song “Cheap Thrills” although so far from my listening the whole album is good; “Bird Set Free” and “Move Your Body” are a couple others that I like. I have to say it will be interesting to see the music videos that come out of this album because with her last album she went very modern interpretive dance with her music. If the direction she took on the Tonight Show it will follow along the same lines. This is not a bad thing, but personally I was so distracted by the dancing it took a second listen for me to realize how much I loved the song.

The other album that came out is by Panic at the Disco called Death of a Bachelor. Now this album is almost an exploration of different genres and beats. It shifts between some heavier rock to almost old style swing. Personal favorites are definitely “Victorious”, “Hallelujah”, “Emperor’s New Clothes”, and “Crazy=Genius”. The video for two of them is pretty neat as well. Those can be viewed after the jump. Continue reading

A Lifetime of Laughter… at the Expense of the Death of a Bachelor

So just glancing at the tags on the site, we haven’t talked about Panic! at the Disco before! They’re a band we really like, despite the fact that they’ve been tagged with terms like “emo.” I’m still not sure I understand what emo means, so I just ignore that – and listen to Panic!

One of the things I really like about Panic! is how their albums feel like a complete whole, like a performance. Complete with introductions, musical interludes, and a finale. Since I tend to like the whole albums, I hadn’t really looked for a music video from them – I’d just gotten the new album…

Their new album, Death of a Bachelor, is pretty great. We found out there was this music video from watching this episode of Teens React. Wow, okay, that’s a video… Then they went back, ironically, to another wedding: their first hit single. Of course, what I have to say is they missed another great video:

It was interesting to find out, though, that the band is down to just the lead singer (can you call it a band then?) I actually saw them live years ago, and it was fun because it was a large band. I mean, they had a lead cello. Just a lot of musicians. To be down to one man left standing is too bad. But hey, he’s keeping the music coming.

Weekend Coffee Share – Apple Music Edition

Not really related to the post at all... Just today's coffee mug!

Not really related to the post at all… Just today’s coffee mug! For more coffee don’t miss the linkup on Part-Time Monster:

If we were having coffee, I might very well complain about Apple Music.

That’s a lie: I love Apple Music. I would complain about a related problem: iCloud Music Library.

Holly and I waited at first when it came to Apple Music. We reached a point, though, in looking at the option for a family account – cheaper than us each having an individual, and available since we family linked our iTunes accounts. We heard it would be available on the new Apple TV which we wanted (and got). We heard it was going to have a whole lotta music.

So we started up our three-month free trial (I think we’re still in it? Might be close to the end…). And I went to turn it on. And it told me something: to use Apple Music, I had to turn on iCloud Music Library. Without a second thought, I turned it on, and Apple blew up my music library. Continue reading
