New from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Danger Mouse – The Getaway

It’s not really a secret that I love music producer Danger Mouse, and his band the Broken Bells is one of my very favorites. I make a habit of checking his Wikipedia page on occasion, watching his discography to see what he’s been working on. That’s how I knew he’d been working with U2 – before that U2 album ended up dropped (for free) on everyone with an iTunes account… It’s also how I knew he’d been working with the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their new album.

Said album is out now! It’s been 5 years since their last album, so I imagine there’s a lot of their fans who are a lot more excited about their return than about the Danger Mouse aspect… I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers in singles form, at least, but I rarely seem to make it through a full album listening. So I had trepidations going into this…

The Getaway is a pretty great album, however. Some of what I love about Danger Mouse is how he produces complete albums, that listen well as a whole and not necessarily just as singles. I can tell that this album got that touch. I also can’t quite tell which songs I would peg as the ones to release as a single, although there’s an official music video out now, and it’s pretty interesting. Good song, interesting, interesting video…

There definitely seems to be a sense that they’re trying to show they’ve “still got it.” That seems like the best way to put it. They’re getting older, but as plenty of other rock bands have shown, you can potentially just keep rocking for decades. I am wearing my Rush 40 shirt right now…

They juxtapose that, however, with a group of younger folks out partying, skateboarding, and having fun together… except that group is young women. So while I feel like another video would have had that younger group as a representation of the band, did this video do the same thing? I don’t know. I’d be interested with your thoughts on it.

I would recommend the album, if you like rock, or the Chili Peppers, or Danger Mouse, or good albums. And before I go, here’s the band with James Corden for a Carpool Karaoke…
