Favorite Truth Altering Moments

Leo DiCaprio wins an Oscar...

Recently I have been thinking a lot about what it means to say something is true, which is a story for another time. In thinking about the idea of truth it made me think about the movies I have seen or stories that I have read where in the end truth seems to be a flexible idea. So here for your consideration are some of my favorite truth altering stories.

Inception

I mean this movie throughout explores the idea of having a dream within a dream, but at what point do you jump too deep and how do you find your way back? The movie leaves us wondering whether it was all a dream.

The Matrix

This movie definitely had some mind bending moments. It does make you question what is real, in the Matrix or the “real” world.

Normal Again, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

This episode is truly brilliant and really breaks the idea of what is real in such a believable way. It is really haunting to think that Buffy is really a person in an insane asylum locked in her own mind.

Battlestar Galactica

There are so many parts of this show that really brings the idea of what is true. If you spend your entire life believing you are one thing only to have something come along and say that you are something else what does that mean?

Bioshock Infinite

This game is so good and is so hard to talk about because if you have not played it and don’t know the story then it is so much better to experience it. Let’s just say that it addresses an interesting problem with time travel.

I really love these sorts of movies and stories because there is something soul searching about questioning our truth and our reality. What would happen if you discovered that the world as you know it was turned upside down? And what titles would you add to the list? Let us know in the comments below!
